  • In this geocolor image captured by GOES-16 and released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Irma a potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane moves westward Tuesday morning Sept. 5 2017 in the Atlantic Ocean

The person who posted the video later added an update to her original post that "Long Island has the all clear".

Meteorologists explain the incredible pressure from Hurricane Irma is pulling the water into the storm's center.

"I am in disbelief right now. This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!"

Basically, in the case of Irma, the power and the pressure have combined in such a way that the "bulge" effect is sucking the Atlantic ocean into its vortex.

Angela Fritz, a meteorologist and science editor at The Washington Post, wrote in a blog post that she has hear about this sucking phenomenon in the past but has never before witnessed it.

Luckily for the locals, the water did not come gushing in all at once, with Adrian later tweeting that the sea "came back".

This Monday Sept. 4 2017 satellite image provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows Hurricane Irma nearing the eastern Caribbean

The storm is so powerful that it has literally absorbed ocean water into its core enough that it dried out the ocean surrounding the Bahamas.

- Video taken in the Bahamas appears to show a rare phenomenon as it looks as if Hurricane Irma has sucked all the water off the shoreline.

More than six million people in Florida, roughly 30 per cent of the population, have been told to evacuate. It happened in the Bahamas on Friday and Saturday, and now it's happening on the Gulf Coast of Florida on Sunday.

The water in Long Island receded back so far, it exposed shells, buoys and even an anchor.

Irma made landfall over the Florida Keys Sunday morning as a category 4 storm.
