The crowd ranged from woodworkers living in the small Gorge town to Pacific Crest Trail hikers from Germany, but on Monday, they had one thing in common: Thanks to the Eagle Creek Fire, they had nowhere else to go.

More than 100 hikers in OR are awaiting rescue after they were forced to shelter in place on a popular trail about 90 miles (144 kilometers) east of Portland because of wildfires.

By 4 p.m., winds from the east picked up, and big plumes of smoke rose from the steep ridges of the OR side of the Gorge. The additional bad news is that unconfirmed reports have the fire jumping the Columbia River and sparking a new fire on the Washington state side.

The district closed Tuesday as the 10,000-acre Eagle Creek fire burned ominously close to the schools. The fire has destroyed an unknown number of structures.

Level 3 evacuations have forced people from approximately 400 homes. Thick black smoke closed parts of two highways as firefighters struggled to fight the blaze fueled by winds gust at up to 40 miles per hour.

Tuesday morning he said the lodge was still threatened. A portion of the park was closed.

The air quality in Spokane was rated as hazardous on Tuesday morning.

A 40 mile stretch of Interstate 84 has also been closed due to heavy smoke and its proximity to the blaze. In early August, Portland's air quality diminished after smoke from wildfires in British Columbia was blown south into the region. Officials said the fire had gone through about half the grove, and had not killed any trees. When the fire started, officials issued warnings to the 153 hikers on the popular Eagle Creek trails that it was unsafe to return to their cars. Troopers have identified a teenage suspect who could face arson charges.

Gov. Kate Brown visited the fire scene Tuesday as ash fell around her.

The growth of the fire has led to the closure of I-84, the major east-west thoroughfare through the Columbia River Gorge, initially from four miles east of Multnomah Falls to two miles west of Hood River (Exit 35 to 62). The sheriff's office says travelers should avoid SR-14 unless they have to travel through the area.

More than 26,000 personnel were fighting the wildfires, and National Guard and other military personnel were being activated to help in the effort, Montana FireWatch reported.

Geranios reported from Spokane, Washington.
