  • Wilshere talks to Arsene Wenger during training as he prepares to return to the first team

On Monday, Frank De Boer was sacked after 77 days as first-team manager (just 32 of those days coming during the actual season), replaced by former Fulham, Liverpool and England boss Roy Hodgson, who last held a club job in 2012.

Next up in the league, Palace have games against Manchester City and Manchester United away, and Chelsea at home.

The 36-year-old has worked on the Reading coaching staff for the past two years after joining them from Burnley following his retirement from playing.

"We've handicapped ourselves by not taking any points in the first four games", he said.

"On the psychological aspect, we have to make sure people don't dig themselves into a grave", Hodgson said.

"I've always had the utmost respect for Roy Hodgson".

"Like every football match, afterwards if you've won it you're bouncing a little bit and are on something of a high, and when you lose it you're on something of a low".

"It's a chapter that's finished, in the past as far as I'm concerned, and now it's a chapter in the book of life opening for me, and one I'm looking forward to". The ambitions here are realistic and there is an enormous potential for growth and I hope we can achieve our goals'.

Former England manager Roy Hodgson would have loved to call on some of that firepower at Selhurst Park as he began his latest job at Crystal Palace, who look serious candidates for relegation after suffering the worst start to a season by any side in English football's top-flight history.

"That for me is all that really matters to me and I am happy to be given the chance to work with that team and I am hopefully and enthusiastic about what we are going to achieve".

But replacing the sacked Frank de Boer at Palace doesn't look like being an easy comeback gig judging by their struggles in losing a fifth straight game in the Premier League with Davis converting the victor from close range.

The London club are yet to even score a goal in the Premier League this season.

Steven Davis scored his first Premier League goal since May 15 2016 - also against Crystal Palace.
