Cardinals could face Jacoby Brissett at QB in Week 2

  • Jacoby Brissett

They turned him into a wide receiver who was a first-round draft pick in 2015.

Brissett started two games for New England last season, going 1-1.

The trade with the Patriots is the second by the Colts in the past five months.

Just as interesting is the impact of the trade in New England. The team has Tom Brady and it's anyone's guess how long he plans to continue playing, but as long as he's around, it's his show.

If that ends up being the case, the Cardinals could face Brissett at quarterback.

As for Brissett, after an impressive rookie year, a rough summer had put his roster spot in jeopardy.

Carr became a cut casualty after the Patriots added Dorsett. Tolzien, who played in three of the Colts' preseason games, did not throw a single touchdown pass in any of them while Brissett tossed four in the Patriots' 40-38 loss to the Giants on Thursday night.

Perhaps the Patriots will begin by working Dorsett into the mix at kick and punter returner, where Dorsett could start for New England after returning 25 punts when he was in college at Miami. The trade makes sense in some ways but it's confusing in others.

Shipping off Dorsett - sunk costs in the eyes of the franchise - looked to be in the cards for a while.

Luck was activated off the PUP list on Saturday, but it was still nearly certain that the Colts would turn to Scott Tolzien as their opening-day starter.

So why wait until now to get a quarterback?

Whoever does establish himself as Luck's backup could well start for the Colts in their season opener at the Rams. There were more experienced wide receivers slotted ahead of him on the depth chart, and quarterback Andrew Luck has been battling injuries since 2015.

As he heads to Indianapolis, Brissett has a chance to be under center in week one. It really just depends if Brissett is actually good.

Brissett was a third-round pick by the New England Patriots past year out of North Carolina State, where he finished his senior season in 2015 completing 237-of-395 (60 percent) of his passes for 2,662 yards with 20 touchdowns to six interceptions, while also running the ball 139 times for 370 yards with six scores.
