Banking giant HSBC has become the latest firm to cut ties with British public relations agency Bell Pottinger after it was thrown out of an industry body for running a racially charged campaign in South Africa.

The UK's Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) moved this week to ban Bell Pottinger from the association for a minimum of five years, mainly for stoking racial tensions in a campaign it led in support of South African president Jacob Zuma and his ruling party.

Bell Pottinger said it had hired accountancy firm BDO "to look at all options for the business including a possible sale" as the tarnished company faced the prospect of being broken up.

Clydesdale Bank, the construction company Carillion, HSBC and TalkTalk revealed on Tuesday that they had stopped working with Bell Pottinger.

Chime instead wrote off its investment and handed its holding back.

Brokenshire in Stormont talks with five main NI parties
The secretary of state will meet with Northern Ireland's main political parties on Monday to discuss the current impasse at Stormont.

The powerful industry regulator, with a membership of over 20,000 PR firms, found that its Professional Practices Committee was unanimous in its view that the Professional Charter and Codes of Conduct had been breached, and recommended to the PRCA Board of Management that Bell Pottinger's membership be terminated. These slogans gained traction in a country where the white minority still wields disproportionate economic power, two decades after the end of apartheid.

Bell Pottinger's South African campaign had material meant to divide South Africans.

The UK accounts for 40 per cent of Bank of Ireland's loan book, mainly through its joint venture with the British Post Office. It is understood that the Bell Pottinger's expulsion from the PRCA earlier this week triggered the decision. This was the same month that the PR firm's chief executive, James Henderson, offered an "unequivocable and absolute" apology for an "inappropriate and offensive" social media campaign. He said while he had ultimate responsibility for Bell Pottinger, he had been "misled" over the campaign by colleagues.

Lord Timothy Bell, who resigned last summer from the company he co-founded, told Newsnight he thought it was "almost certain" Bell Pottinger would not survive the scandal. "I think the decline is terminal".
