James Damore, whose memo over the weekend caused an uproar online, said in an email that he was terminated late Monday for "perpetuating gender stereotypes".
The Twitter hashtag #JamesDamore was drawing a storm of opinions both attacking Damore for his memo and his qualifications as an engineer, and criticizing Google for his dismissal.
Google, which has been accused by the Labor Department of systematically paying women less than men, said the memo was hurtful to other employees and would make it hard for Damore to work with women, according to media reports.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai cut his the vacation short and returned to the company's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters as criticism mounted over a senior engineer's controversial memo condemning Google's diversity initiatives.
This instance has become a debatable issue among the other companies and in Google, that gender discrimination is not acceptable, and more strict points should be added in the norms of the company to avoid such circumstances in future. Pichai acknowledged that the memo had impacted employees some of whom he said are hurting because they feel their being judged based only on gender. Our co-workers shouldn't have to worry that each time they open their mouths to speak in a meeting, they have to prove that they are not like the memo states, being "agreeable" rather than 'assertive, ' showing a 'lower stress tolerance, ' or being 'neurotic'. Damore was sacked from Google on Monday for violating the company's code of conduct.
At the center of this storm is the company's new chief diversity officer, Danielle Brown. Damore used the "manifesto" to argue the company is intolerant of conservative political views.

"As far as I know, I have a legal right to express my concerns about the terms and conditions of my working environment and to bring up potentially illegal behavior, which is what my document does", he wrote.
Legal experts note that there are some workplace protections on speech. This is one reason he describes Damore's chance for success as an "uphill battle".
She continued: "But even if you accepted the idea that there are some biological differences, all researchers would assert that they're so tiny that there's no way that they can explain the kind of gender gap that's apparent at Google".
Such thinking "is definitely entrenched in a company the size of Google, but it also happens in small companies, so I wouldn't say anybody is off the hook", said Nicole Sanchez, CEO and founder of Vaya Consulting, which specializes in diversity. It's a safe bet the company would like to sweep this under the rug as soon as possible.
The document made world news, Damore was promptly sacked and Google's top brass quickly issued statements distancing the company from its sentiments.
