  • Military Bases Can Now Shoot Down Drones That Are Trespassing

While the specific actions that the USA military can take against drones are classified, they include destroying or seizing private and commercial drones that pose a threat, Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis told reporters on Monday.

Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the various branches of the military received the new guidance on Friday, and this would be passed on to bases across the country.

If you have a drone, make sure you don't fly them too close to airports or military bases.

"The increase of commercial and private drones in the USA has raised our concerns with regards to safety and security of our installations", Davis said.

United States willing to talk to N. Korea: Tillerson
South Korea in particular is taking steps, with support from the USA , to defend itself against the threat. If we know about it, it's going to be sunk because opposition will grow to it", said Thayer.

In 2015, officials from the US military, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the FAA gathered at the DHS headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, to discuss the potential use of hobbyist drones by terrorists or assassins. Local commanders will now have that option if a drone is deemed to fly over a base that is deemed sensitive or pose a specific threat.

Davis said the Defense Department worked with the FAA and other federal agencies to develop its new policy. The watchdog has forecast that US-based hobbyists will own more than 3.5 million drones by 2021, and that there could be a further 1.6 million commercial models in operation.

The Pentagon said the new policy applies to 133 military facilities, presumably the same ones listed in April's announcement.

Prominent locations including the Pentagon and Washington are already "no drone zones". Davis said the military will determine how to handle each situation on a case-by-case basis depending on each circumstance and the type of installation where unmanned aircraft are loitering.
