If you happened to watch the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships on Saturday, you were able to see Usain Bolt in his last individual race as a professional.
Jamaican "lightning" Usain Bolt lost his first-ever world championships final to his rivals, in the last 100m race of his career last Saturday, while 35-year-old American Justin Gatlin, 2005 world champion, emerged the surprise victor in 9.92 seconds, 0.03 seconds ahead of Bolt.
Experienced Yohan Blake, who finished fourth in the men's 100m final and failed to qualify for the final round in 200m, did not start in the heats but Bolt later said that he will return in the final race. But if there is any doubt how badly he wants to close his account with a gold medal, one only needs to consider that today's leg will be Bolt's first in the heats at a major global senior championships.
The fastest qualifiers are always awarded the more preferable middle lanes. "You could see in the heat, they wanted to prove a point and show me".
Acknowledging Bolt's greatness, Gatlin kneeled and bowed to his longtime adversary moments after the race. Upon their race, every athlete is met by a team of three coaches; one hands them a Gatorade (blue, red or orange - which I am not convinced are technically flavours), the next asks if they are feeling any tension in their bulging muscles and then the third asks the athlete question upon question about every other competitor in the event.
Usain Bolt has set himself up for a golden finish after anchoring Jamaica to a place in Saturday night's 4x100m relay final. He was unable to finish the race. Gatlin is the only other Tennessee Vol to accomplish the feat. Bolt is now hoping to redeem that for his fans and country tomorrow when he runs for Jamaica in the 4x100m relay at the IAAF 2017 World Championships in London. Many of his green and gold clad Jamaican countrymen had crossed the Atlantic to witness his grand finale.
Bolt admitted he was disappointed but would never change his idea of retiring because the new life ahead is more inviting.

The eight-time Olympic gold medalist finished third in a photo finish to runner-up Christian Coleman, and Gatlin on August 5 at London Stadium, site of the 2012 Olympic Games. In the last decade or so nearly the only world class Jamaican sprinter who hasn't failed a drug test is Bolt, and the cheaters have helped haul in a glittering array of medals for Jamaica. The man who stands atop the 100m podium in the Olympics and the World Championships also carries the title of "Fastest Man in the World".
