Trump held an impromptu press conference late Tuesday "in, I believe, the seventh circle of hell", Colbert told his studio audience.

"And I'm not joking when I say I would feel more comfortable if Cersei Lannister was running this country", Kimmel said, referring to the "Game of Thrones" character. Noting the combative swagger of a person digging himself deeper and deeper on national television, Colbert answered Trump's defiant riposte that the questioning reporters can't be sure of what really happened in that comprehensively documented, torch-wielding, murderous, Nazi-saluting white supremacist rally with a grinning, "The only thing I'm doubting right now is whether you're gonna be president by Friday". After rolling a clip of Trump seeming to equate Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson to George Washington and lobbing blame at the "Alt-Left" for the violence over the weekend, Meyers zeroed in on White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly hanging his head during the event. It was like if your book club meeting turned into a cockfight.

"I wait for the facts, okay?"

Later on Twitter, Colbert continued to share his thoughts on Trump's comments. Just ask the millions of illegal voters who refused to look for Obama's birth certificate during my record-breaking inauguration. O.K.? "It's all on the Obama wiretaps".

"Along with a clip from the president's speech, he wrote, "'I don't agree with the Nazis, but they had a permit for Normandy & the Allies didn't' -Donald Trump".

"You know that list of side effects at the end of a pharmaceutical ad?" "He apparently has all of them". But, as Stephen Colbert laid out in his Late Show monologue, Trump went rogue at a Trump Tower presser on Tuesday. "Normally, when someone is talking that level of insane, Batman punches through the ceiling and punches him".

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon taped before the president's press conference.

The host then described Trump as a "bad waitress in a crappy diner who is trying to get fired so she can go to a concert". All told, the presser left Meyers with just one question: "Congress, isn't this enough?"

"And, if you were a better president, you would have said something very nice".
