Hope and glory as West Indies stun England

SHAI HOPE said his maiden Test hundred yesterday against England had come with a sense of relief, following below-par performances in his previous 11 Tests.

The West Indies, set a seemingly imposing 322 for victory, finished on 322 for five with 28 balls to spare.

The 23-year-old became the first person in history to record centuries in both innings of a first-class match at Headingley, but more importantly his 118 not out in trying circumstances ushered the tourists to an Investec series-levelling five-wicket triumph.

West Indies chased down 322 on the fifth and final day against England to win the second Test.

Coming into the second Test at Headingley, the visitors were under pressure.

I think we were all tricked by the pitch, we thought it was going to get worse and worse but it was flat as a pancake for the last two days - hardly anything happened.

West Indies, hopeful at tea of pushing for a first test victory in England since 2000, was completely demoralized at stumps.

You wonder whether Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope knew that.

Manchester United vs. Leicester 2017 live stream
If all my years playing Football Manager has told me anything, it's that a player's morale can often dictate the result of a game. The 2016 champions have started the season well, losing narrowly to Arsenal at the Emirates and beating Brighton at home.

Blackwood also got a life when Stokes dropped him in the deep but with just six runs needed off nearly as many overs at the time and while Blackwood fell with victory in sight, England's fate was already sealed.

After bowling out England for 258, Windies posted 427 to secure a valuable first innings lead of 169 runs.

England's plight was summed up when Cook dropped Shai Hope on 106. Windies still required 76 runs to win and just over 20 overs in which to do it but the tourists had clearly made a decision to go for it.

Yet when Moeen Ali tempted Brathwaite into a drive just before tea to have him caught at first slip by Ben Stokes for 95, it left this most excellent of contests on an even sharper knife edge.

Hope took the bulk of the plaudits after becoming the first man ever to make two tons in a first-class game at Headingley. Soon after, Hope reached his hundred and the pair carried on without much fuss - although Blackwood hit Broad for another six - to within two runs of victory when Blackwood tried to finish it in style off Moeen but was stumped for 41.

'I'm really pleased with the character and fight we showed to get back into a strong position last night but unfortunately it wasn't to be'.

England captain Joe Root was gutted to have lost, and said: "It was a great Test match for everyone watching, but it wasn't great to be on the losing day".
