Google Play to Rank Apps Based on Their Performance, Stability

  • Bad Android Apps Officially Getting Downgraded in Google Play Store

This means that the most visible apps in the Play Store will be less likely to crash, behave weirdly, or even ask for more permissions than they should.

When it comes to trying to get rid of the bad Android apps on Google Play Store, Google is using both human involvement and machine learning tools to try to eliminate the problems.

The Play Store is home to a huge collection of apps, with thousands of them being added daily, although not all of them abide by Google's rigorous standards. Now the Play Store will account for crashes, render times, battery usage, and number of uninstalls when presenting search results and ranking popular apps. If an app doesn't meet these requirements, it will be shown lower in search results compared with similar apps that do, and will also be demoted in discovery algorithms (like the "Similar apps" section, for example). "In fact, in an internal analysis of app reviews on Google Play, we noticed that half of 1-star reviews mentioned app stability".

This new Google Play ranking algorithms will be tested out on selected users but will eventually expand across all Android devices eventually. It offers the example of Basuu which managed to increase its rating from 4.1 to 4.5 star exclusively by focusing on app performance.

Sprint Surges After It Returns to Profit in First Quarter
Most of the rumors around a Sprint merger so far have centered around Charter or T-Mobile US Inc . In the same period a year ago, it reported a net loss of $302 million, or 8 cents per share.

In a blog post outlining the changes, Google also suggests that developers should focus on the quality and performance of their apps, if they find themselves sliding down the list.

Until this update, search results in the Play Store would prioritize popularity over support.

To roll out over the next week the updated algorithm will continue or so across the Google Play Store worldwide, the company says. Google notes the change has had a positive impact on user engagement, with people installing higher quality apps being less prone to uninstalling them afterwards and using them longer.
