Formosat-5 rockets into Earth's orbit

  • The Falcon 9 rocket reaches Max Q the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure

FORMOSAT-5 satellite was launched by SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on August 25, 2017 at 2:51 a.m. Taiwan time from the U.S. Vandenberg Air Force Base.

This marks an even dozen launches for SpaceX for the year, which is remarkable given that just last September the company suffered a significant setback when one of its rockets exploded during pre-launch operations on the launch pad ahead of a mission to put a Facebook-operated satellite into orbit.

The latest successful landing brings SpaceX's record to 15 successful recoveries in 20 attempts so far and its 9th successful landing this year.

Taiwan's first locally built satellite has been launched into space, in what some analysts said could be a boost for the island's surveillance capabilities as well as its efforts to capture a slice of the burgeoning global space technology sector. And after launch, SpaceX will pull off its rocket landing stunt again, by having its Falcon 9 touch down on one of the company's drone ships in the Pacific Ocean.

Taylor Swift's new album title, release date announced
Thus, with all of the controversy lately, critics have been quick to call her reputation into question. Not a bad strategy for a woman known to bury references in her liner notes.

An advanced ionospheric probe from the National Central University in Taiwan is also aboard Formosat 5.

Chang said FormoSat-7 testing will begin later this year in November, and he pegged May or June 2018 as the tentative time for its launch from Florida. The booster landing activity is the part of SpaceX program to reuse the rockets which can launch multiple missions so that spaceflight cost can be reduced.

NSPO Deputy Director-General Yu Shiann-jen (余憲政) on Monday defended the satellite's development, saying: "Formosat-5 is capable of delivering colorful imagery and resolve down to 4m, better than the 8m of Formosat-2". It will open at 10:30 a.m. and close right before the launch.

Moments before the first-stage touchdown the video link to the vessel froze, then reappeared and showed the rocket standing.
