Disney to stop new movies for Netflix from 2019

Bob Iger announced yesterday that Disney was now at work on their own streaming service, which in the future would exclusively display their content. Iger clarified what this would mean: mainline content like Disney's animated and live-action movies would move immediately to the new service. The main point of my column-that weakness in Disney's cable brands like ESPN would continue-was proven correct, as sales from its media and networks division cam in at $1.84 billion, below expectations for $1.99 billion. They also contribute a significant number of Disney's output.

We'll also be making a substantial investment in original movies, original television series, and short form content for this platform, produced by our studio, Disney Interactive and Disney Channel teams. In a blog post following Disney's announcement, Greenfield lambasted the strategic steps the company and its Chief Executive Robert Iger have taken.

Disney said in a statement it would offer a "multi-sport video streaming service" with its ESPN brand in early 2018 followed by "a new Disney-branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019". Netflix shares, meanwhile, were recently off 2.8 percent at $173.39 following Disney's announcement. The current plan is for Disney and ESPN streaming services to be available for purchase directly from Disney and ESPN; in app stores; and from authorized pay-TV partners. It was also mentioned that this video streaming service will provide the people with 10,000 sports events every year including contents from NHL, MLS, MLB, and collegiate sports events.

Some Twitter users expressed frustration with losing access to their favorite Disney movies on Netflix. There's been talk of launching proprietary Marvel and Star Wars services, he said on Disney's earnings call on Tuesday. Disney now uses BAMTech to stream the content, which it now owns a third of but plans to buy a majority stake in. Both studios are home to the huge franchise which includes "The Star Wars" and "Avengers" respectively. One of the biggest draws of Netflix content was its suite of Disney films.

Moana - Disney said "You're Welcome" when it gave Netflix Moana, but evidently being polite didn't go very far. Consumers are also more comfortable using pay-TV alternatives than they were in the past, and there is a greater chance consumers will sign up for multiple OTT services rather than just look for one provider - cord-cutting has reduced monthly spend on video entertainment, so potentially there are funds that have been "freed up" for a new service.

Several days before Disney officially announced its bold move, Netflix already made moves of its own.
