Once again, the Mariners have made a significant trade after last month's non-waiver trade deadline.

The Mariners have acquired starting pitcher Mike Leake in a trade with the Cardinals, the team announced Wednesday.

Leake has roughly $55 million left on his contract, so the Mariners may be absorbing the brunt of the money he's still owed while providing the Cardinals with some salary relief and an open spot on the 40-man roster.

The Mariners are desperate for help with starters Felix Hernandez, James Paxton and Hisashi Iwakuma now on the disabled list.

Leake, who waived his no-trade clause to complete the deal, has a 4.21 ERA and 1.325 WHIP in 26 starts this season. He also has pitched for the Reds and Giants.

This is the second pitcher the Mariners have acquired from the Cardinals this season. Leake started 2017 red-hot, with a 2.24 ERA after 10 starts.

Leake has been one of the most durable starters in the National League but has not been at his best since the All-Star break.

Seattle started the day on a four-game losing streak and has fallen three games behind Minnesota in the chase for the second wild card spot. There is also a mutual option in play for the 2022 season which would earn Leake a $5 million buyout if the Mariners chose to cut ties with the veteran starting pitcher.
