  • Teenager Sam Kanizay's bloody legs after possibly being bitten by something while bathing at Brighton

Mr Kanizay said by the time Sam returned to his shoes, his legs were covered in blood.

Jarrod couldn't stop his son's legs from bleeding.

The leading theory was that Kanizay probably came in contact with sea lice, which are usually parasites of fish.

It's not the first time sea lice have attacked a swimmer.

"It sort of looked like hundreds of little pinholes or pin-sized bites distributed all over my ankle and the top of my foot".

A suspected attack by sea lice hospitalized 16-year-old Sam Kanizay of Melbourne.

"They ate through Sam's skin and made it bleed profusely", he said.

Alistair Poore, an expert on marine invertebrates from the University of New South Wales, agreed with the sea lice assessment levied by Keough.

Sam Kanizay's feet after he emerged from the water at Brighton Beach.

"There was a massive pool of blood on the floor (at the hospital)".

"I collected these odd creatures from the same spot last night by trapping them in a net and standing in the water myself", he said.

In a continuing show of defiance, Ortega Diaz filed papers Thursday seeking a court order to block installation of the new assembly.

"I think it's the most likely culprit", Dr Poore told The New Daily.

The teenager said he did not feel any pain when walking out from the beach.

The creatures are a type of copepod, a Greek word for "oar-footed" because they have a "pair of swimming legs ... that are moved together, like the oars of a sculling shell", the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History explains.

Sam Kanizay, 16, was soaking his legs at Dendy Street Beach to cool down after football on Saturday night when he felt his legs tingling.

"There are a lot of bait fish around at the moment so whether there's some smaller creature that the bait fish are chasing".

Jarrod told The Age that at Sandringham Hospital "We had the emergency room full of everybody that was working there just fascinated, the were all on Google afterwards, hypothesising as to what happened".

Yikes. We'll let you know when researchers figure this one out.

Video Mr. Kanizay took show the little creatures feasting on the bait.

He added: "We've brought them home and they've just attached themselves to this meat". He said, 'Dad, you better come down outside.' I said, 'Why?' He said, 'Just come down!' "Whether it's toxicity experts or marine exerts and other medics around Melbourne at one (knows)".

The marine biologist had been on a night dive taking pictures under a nearby pier when he found his forehead and cheeks were bleeding when he resurfaced.
