Remains of 1,641 victims have been identified.

Before this latest victim, the last time a new identification was made was in March 2015.

The remains of a man killed in the 9/11 terror attack on New York's World Trade Centre have been identified 16 years on following advances in DNA testing.

The Medical Examiner's office used DNA testing on remains found in the devastation to identify the man.

His distinguishing proof was affirmed through DNA retesting.

A total of 2,996 people died on the day of the attack, when planes hijacked by Al-Qaeda operatives crashed into the World Trade Center in NY, a wing of the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

DNA has been the single largest method for identifying remains, while dental records, fingerprints and personal effects have been used to a lesser extent, according to figures released Monday by the medical examiner. Investigators started using new, more successful DNA technology earlier this year to identify them. This was due to the effects of the heat, bacteria and chemicals such as jet fuel - which made it all that more hard to identify victims.

Now and again, researchers have backpedaled to a similar bone section at least 10 times, trusting new innovation will give answers.

In 2013, authorities sifted through truckloads of debris unearthed by construction crews who were working on rebuilding the site. Conceivable stays of more than 20 casualties were recuperated.

Few full bodies were recovered after the giant skyscrapers burned and collapsed - and the effects of heat, bacteria and chemicals have made it hard to analyse remains.

Nearly 3,000 individuals were slaughtered in NY, at the Pentagon and close Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in the assaults.
