  • Germany's Angelique Kerber returns to Shelby Rogers of the United States during their Women's singles match on day six at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London Saturday

A court hearing in the case of the 11-month-old boy, whose medical treatment has made headlines around the world, has given little Charlie's parents 48 hours to gather as much as evidence as possible to show that new treatment will help their baby.

The U.K.'s High Court has set a hearing regarding Charlie's case for Thursday.

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital continue to think that extending the treatment would be "unjustified", given the suffering endured by the child, as they said on Friday in a statement.

May told the parliament last week that she was confident that the hospital would "consider any offers or new information that has come forward with consideration of the well-being of a desperately ill child".

The application came after both Pope Francis and President Donald Trump fuelled worldwide attention to the case, with hospitals in Rome and the USA offering to provide Charlie the experimental therapy.

Maxwell Smith, who lives in the United Kingdom with his parents, was diagnosed with mitochondrial depletion when he was only several months old, but at the age of five, he is alive thanks to nucleoside bypass treatment.

Charlie's father Chris yelled across the court room at a barrister, demanding: When are you going to start telling the truth? Arturo EstopiƱan, who lives with his parents in Baltimore, Md., was diagnosed at just over a year old and has lived to the age of six, also thanks to the treatment now denied to Gard.

"Unfortunately, situations such as this, that involve withdrawing life-sustaining treatment are not uncommon and fall within the responsibilities of many paediatricians". Connie Yates reportedly asked the judge.

Armstrong claimed that Francis' previous decision against the parents' request in April raises questions about his capability to hear the latest case fairly, though the judge insisted he very strongly wants Gard to live.

Meanwhile, the Vatican has said the Pope is following the case "with affection and emotion" and "expresses his own closeness to his parents".

Speaking to the BBC before Monday's hearing, Yates said the couple had endured a "living hell" over recent months, saying "it's disgusting that this decision has been taken out of our hands".

"There is nothing to lose, he deserves a chance", she added.
