In March, Microsoftlaunched its Office Insider Builds bug bounty program, in which the reward limit was set at up to $15,000 in the normal course, and for "certain submissions", participants could gain up to $15,000 more, notes ZDNet.
The aim of this program is to target any critical or important class remote execution, elevation of privilege, or design flaws in the Windows 10 operating system which can be used by attackers to compromise the security and privacy of a device, Microsoft has explained.
The Redmond-headquartered technology giant Microsoft on Tuesday, July 25, launched the Windows Bounty Program with rewards start at a minimum of $500 and can go up to as high as $250,000. Since then, the company has only increased the scale of the program (and the reward) to include Hyper-V hypervisor, the Edge browser and Windows' exploit mitigation systems, such as DEP and ASLR. The Program consists of four categories which gives good hackers monetary payouts ranging between $500 to $250,000. "Microsoft strongly believes in the value of the bug bounties, and we trust that it serves to enhance our security capabilities", the blog post read. The First finder of the Vulnerability already known by the company internally will be paid a maximum of 10% of the highest amount.
"All security bugs are important to us and we request you report all security bugs to [email protected] via Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure policy".
Under the new terms, those who find a vulnerability in the slow Windows Insider release track will be awarded $30,000.
It's always better to find and fix a hole before it becomes a massive problem, especially when it comes to security issues. Rewarding security researchers with bounties costs peanuts compared to paying for a serious security snafu.
