  • JIT on Panama papers presents its final report to the Supreme Court and government rejects

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Monday evening, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said the report is a compilation of allegations hurled by political opponents of the PML-N.

"There exists a significant disparity between the wealth declared by the respondents and the means through which the respondents had generated income from known or declared sources", the report said, according to a partial copy released to reporters.

Respondent 1 refers to Prime Minister Sharif; Respondent 6 was Maryam; Respondent 7 Hussain; while Respondent 8 was Hassan.

Ahsan Iqbal said the report lacks any substantial evidence against the prime minister and his family.

The report alleged that there was "irregular movement of huge amounts in shape of loans and gifts" to Sharif's family and Pakistan Based companies from the companies based in Saudi Arabia, UAE and the UK.

He said that the party's lawyers were analysing the report from every angle. "Therefore, we are rejecting this report, terming it rubbish".

He said there were many lacuanas in the report and the same would be highlighted before the court. "We will demolish this report".

Ishaq Dar premier's 'frontman': Imran

Sharif also asked Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan "not to hide behind the JIT" to conspire against him and challenged the cricketer-turned-politician to compete with him in elections. The words of the JIT will not be final as Supreme Court itself will analyse the contents and then decide the future course of action.

The report, spread over 10 volumes, was brought in two cartons which were carried on a trolley into the apex court.

The Supreme Court is due to review the findings and will convene a hearing into the allegations on July 17.

The probing team comprises officials of National Accountability Bureau, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), State Bank of Pakistan, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), headed by Additional Director General FIA Wajid Zia. Several assets have raised eyebrows which include four flats that cost million pounds in Park Lane, London, United Kingdom. But the final decision rests with the Supreme Court, which will take up the case next Monday.

The JIT questioned Sharif family including the Prime Minister, his younger brother and Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, sons Hassan and Hussain, daughter Maryam, son-in-law Captain Safdar, cousin Tariq Shafi and close relative Ishaq Dar.

Meanwhile, Sharif's rival Imran told the media that the PML-N chief should resign as prime minister.
