How 3 cups of coffee a day can extend your life

  • Could Drinking MORE Coffee Be Good For You

The studies were observational and therefore demonstrate an association, rather than proving cause and effect.

The first study, led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Imperial College London, surveyed more than fifty thousand people across 10 countries in Europe.

The European study, on the other hand, showed an inverse association between drinking coffee and liver disease, suicide in men, cancer in women, digestive diseases and circulatory diseases.

The second study - the largest of its kind - involved more than 450,000 participants, recruited between 1992 and 2000 across ten European countries, who were again followed for just over 16 years on average.

Men who drank the most coffee were 12 percent less likely to die during the follow-up period of the study, compared to men who didn't drink as much or at all. Veronica Wendy Setiawan, an associate professor at the USC's Keck School Medicine, said that the findings have consistent with relation to the previous studies that had been conducted with the white population.

Ah coffee, that miracle beverage that cures so many of life's ailments and the thing I simply must have before you speak to me.

"Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and phenolic compounds that play an important role in cancer prevention", Setiawan said. But it's thought these great benefits are down to antioxidants in coffee, not the caffeine.

Drink coffee? It may reduce your risk of an early death

Coffee addicts and enthusiasts habitually say drinking the bitter brew makes life worth living, but drinking coffee may also help them live longer, two major global studies published on Monday say. And this research provides information to the people who didn't drink coffee. Professor of metabolic medicine from University of Glasgow, Naveed Sattar said that the link could be due to factors like lifestyle and not necessarily the coffee. "But the research on coffee has mostly shown no harm to people's health".

The study also looked at a subset of 14,800 participants, finding that coffee-drinkers had better results on many biological markers including liver enzymes and glucose control.

Coffee is more than an obsession-it's responsible for a roughly $48 billion market in the USA, where 64 percent of people say they drink one or more cups a day, according to Gallup. "Coffee drinking provides exposure to a range of biologically active compounds, and higher consumption has been linked with lower levels of inflammation, insulin resistance, and risk for diabetes", the study notes.

Two new studies suggest that even a single cup of coffee a day can significantly decrease the risk of dying early. In every country, "coffee drinking was associated with reduced risk for death from various causes".

"That said, our results suggest that moderate coffee drinking is not detrimental to your health, and that incorporating coffee into your diet could have health benefits", he says.

He said that drinking more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day - equivalent to four to five cups of coffee - can cause symptoms such as dizziness and a spike in heart rate.
