  • Russia hits back over sanctions, orders US diplomats to leave

The Russian Foreign Ministry says the United States must reduce the size of its diplomatic staff in Russia and will no longer be able to use a U.S. Embassy dacha and storage warehouses in Moscow.

The bill would affect a range of Russian industries and might further hurt the Russian economy, already weakened by 2014 sanctions imposed after the Ukraine crisis.

Savonlinna: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia was ready to cooperate with neutral countries that bordered the Baltic Sea like Finland which is not part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance.

The White House said in a statement that Trump has reviewed the final version of the bill and "approves the bill and intends to sign it".

In passing the measure, Congress essentially forced the president to decide between taking a harder stance against Russia or issue a veto amid investigations into ties between his campaign and Russian officials.

Russian Federation was speaking after the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to impose new sanctions on Moscow and to force President Donald Trump to obtain lawmakers' permission before easing any sanctions on Russian Federation. Trump's new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, hedged the inevitability that Trump will sign, telling CNN's New Day on Thursday that the president "may sign the sanctions exactly the way they are or he may veto the sanctions and negotiate an even tougher deal against the Russians".

The Senate passed the bill, 98-2, two days after the House pushed the measure through by an overwhelming margin, 419-3.

Russian Federation had been threatening retaliation for weeks.

"As you know, we are exercising restraint and patience, but at some moment we'll have to retaliate".

"When will our response follow? It's impossible to endlessly tolerate this boorishness towards our country", Putin told a joint news conference with his Finnish counterpart.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said, in response, it is ordering the U.S. Embassy in Russia to reduce the number of its diplomats by September 1.

The White House's rhetoric on the sanctions bill echoes that surrounding the president's controversial decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, which includes 194 countries.

"There is a tremendous and unprecedented effort by Congress to assert its influence on Russian Federation and foreign policy because it does not trust the president", said Elizabeth Rosenberg, senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a former senior adviser at the Treasury Department.
