Charlie Gard's Parents Return to Court For Life Support Hearing

As worldwide pressure and support for baby Charlie's chance at treatment grew, Great Ormond Street Hospitalannounced that it was calling for a new hearing in light of "claims of new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition". "The key obstacle and one which the hospital can not see a way around is the reality of invasive ventilation that Charlie requires".
Despite enormous efforts (these included enquiries through the Children's Hospital Alliance which comprises all dedicated children's hospitals nationally as well as large paediatric units) GOSH has been unable to find any other hospital, whether in the NHS or the private sector, prepared to accept Charlie for end of life care.
"We have always paid tribute to the extraordinary courage and strength of Connie Yates and Chris Gard and their devotion to their son", a spokesperson for GOSH said.
The little boy's mother Connie Yates was back in court on Tuesday, a day after she and her partner Chris Gard abandoned legal action over treatment for Charlie.
The legal battle stretched on for months until Gard's parents made the agonizing decision Monday.
"This is the true legacy of Charlie: The commitment to develop an actual model of personalized medicine", the Bambino Gesù hospital said.
Judge Nicholas Francis adjourned the hearing to allow time to explore more options and possible mediation, after lawyers for the hospital said doctors are willing in principle to let the child return home but are concerned about the practicalities of providing care outside the hospital. They said they accept that his condition has deteriorated to the point where the experimental treatment would not work. "Mummy and Daddy love you so much Charlie, we always have and we always will and we are so sorry that we couldn't save you". He says tests show that the baby has irreversible muscular damage. After Tuesday's hearing, the High Court would decide whether Charlie would be sent home with his parents.

The baby has a rare genetic condition and will die once his life support is removed. It says it would like to fulfill the parents' wishes, but must also take the baby's best interests into account.
"If the (experimental) treatment had been tried in time, there would have been some possibility of having an impact on this disease", Enrico Bertini told journalists.
Bertini examined 11-month-old Charlie last week at London's Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital with USA neuroscientist Michio Hirano, who, after reviewing the latest scans, said he was no longer prepared to offer the experimental nucleoside treatment, as the baby had irreversible brain and muscle damage.
Mum Connie Yates appeared before the High Court today as part of the request but the court was told the ventilator needed for the 11-month-old wouldn't fit through the front door of the family home.
Britain's High Court is considering new evidence in the case of Charlie Gard. His parents said they knew the chance of the experimental treatment working was slim, but they wanted to try anyway for Charlie's sake.
The couple continues to insist Charlie could have been helped had he received the treatment sooner.
Judge Nicholas Francis scheduled a two-day hearing to consider fresh evidence after Dr. Michio Hirano, an American neurology expert from Columbia Medical Center in NY, came to London to examine the child. Their lawyer accuses Great Ormond Street Hospital of putting obstacles in their way.
