The president's decision to pull the U.S. out of the world's first comprehensive agreement on tackling climate change and seek renegotiated terms "fair" to America drew widespread worldwide condemnation earlier this month.
Italy's environment minister, Gian Luca Galletti, who is leading the G-7 environment meeting in Bologna, said that despite the split, dialogue had to continue, including on other environmental issues such as ocean pollution.
However, the US refused to sign a joint statement on climate change with the other G7 countries.
The Paris agreement was signed by 195 nations in December 2015 to outline what the world needs to do to limit the increase in temperature of the planet to less than two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt was among the loudest critics of the Paris deal in the Trump administration.
