Wales face tough test on the road in Serbia

16 June, 2017, 06:26 | Author: Glenda Knight

Wales' draw, their fifth in Group D, has left them four points behind Serbia and the Republic of Ireland with four matches remaining.

Named after Czechoslovakia's Antonin Panenka, who scored the victor in a shoot-out against West Germany in the 1976 European Championship final, the original actually came at the same Belgrade ground where Ramsey displayed incredible composure 41 years on.

The only regret for Wales was that it never turned out to be the winning goal.

For the second time in World Cup qualifying, Aleksandar Mitrovic denied Wales a win over Serbia thanks to a late equaliser.

Serbia are a very good side and Wales would have taken a point before they kicked a ball in Belgrade.

Referee Jorge Sousa waved play on but he did book Allen in the 56th minute for a foul on Kostic, meaning the Stoke City midfielder will miss the next qualifier at home to Austria.

This was always going to be a test of mental fortitude as much as anything else for Wales.

Coleman was forced into three changes from the team that drew 0-0 in Dublin in March with Gareth Bale and Neil Taylor suspended and Hal Robson-Kanu injured.

The response from Wales, however, was full of objective, looking to take back the initiative and grab a second goal that they easily deserved. It was an outrageous piece of skill and came after a comedy of errors from Serbia's point of view.

Goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic foolishly attempted to shield a long ball out of play on the right and dragged Ramsey to ground, conceding a free-kick from which Luka Milivojevic's tug on Sam Vokes' shirt saw a penalty awarded to the visitors. It was a huge call from the official and one that Ramsey was determined to make the most of in style as he stepped forward and casually dinked the ball into the corner of the net, leaving Stojkovic looking on in despair as he dived in the opposite direction. But as stated earlier, Wales seem to enjoy being the underdogs and although lagging behind in the group, their destiny still remains in their own hands for the time being. Mitrovic could and should have done better with a free header from eight yards that failed to trouble Wayne Hennessey.

Aaron Ramsey (Wales) Led his team with intensity and enthusiasm, dragging them up the pitch, chasing back to cover, and behind everything good that they did.

"We have a strong squad here and we are happy with the players we've got so there will be no complaints from me come what may tomorrow night", Coleman told a news conference ahead of Sunday's clash in the cauldron of Red Star's stadium.

Wales were pinned in as Serbia kept pressing. Other two matches of Serbia ended with the result of the draw against the Republic of Ireland and Wales.
