US President Donald Trump renewed his online criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday, calling his statements "pathetic" in the wake of Saturday's terrorist attack.
Khan had told Londoners there was "no reason to be alarmed" about an increased police presence in the coming days.
Trump has leaped on the London attacks as evidence of the need for hardline security measures in the United States, including a ban on travelers from some Muslim countries.
Although Khan responded to past attacks from the president, he denied doing so this week, with his office saying that the mayor "has more important things than responding to Donald Trump's ill-informed tweet".
Mr Khan told the Press Association: "I've said for a long time that I think that the invitation from Prime Minister Theresa May to Donald Trump for a state visit was premature". Trump has used the policy, stalled now in U.S. courts, as an example of the sort of toughness that he says Khan refuses to show amid terrorism attacks that are riling the United Kingdom.
The acting U.S. ambassador to the UK, Lewis Lukens, meanwhile appeared to distance himself from Trump's initial tweet, writing on Sunday: "I commend the strong leadership of the mayor of London as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack".

Sometimes these leaders rule unethically by Western standards, yet we remain allied to them because our economic interests align. He worked with Pablo Escobar and was accused of helping the Medellin cartel send tons and tons of cocaine to the US.
Ever since Mr Trump came into power, both Mr Khan and him have had a bitter relationship as the USA president and his family has never left a chance to put Mr Khan on the spot, often taking his quotes out of context; all this only because he is Muslim.
Trump has repeatedly twisted Khan's words on Twitter.

In the article, Khan was reported as saying that being prepared for terror attacks was "part and parcel" of living in a major city.
Khan's remarks about not being alarmed referred to the heightened police presence in the city, not with the threat of terrorism itself.
Khan hits back later when asked by Britain's Channel 4 News if he thought Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom should be called off.
