  • The National Hurricane Center says there is a 60 percent chance of tropical development in the circled area within 5 days

A weather system in the Gulf of Mexico has a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm in the next day or two, threatening energy infrastructure as it advances toward Texas and Louisiana, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Bret is expected to weaken as it moves across the Caribbean Tuesday while a second, larger system rolling across the Gulf of Mexico appears to be intensifying.

Nussbaum notes, "The latest forecast models show what will likely be Cindy making landfall anywhere between SW Louisiana and the SE TX coast on Thursday Morning".

Heavy rain continues to be the biggest threat for the metro New Orleans area, according to the National Weather Service's New Orleans office.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 3 does not have a name as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, and the NWS has already issued watches and warnings along the Texas and Louisiana coasts in line with the changes. If that tropical depression strengthens into the tropical storm, it would be named using the next name on that year's list of names. Flooding will be possible in the Panhandle of Florida, Shields said.

The system that will become Cindy is not the only storm meteorologists are tracking this week.

A tropical storm watch is also in effect on the upper Texas coast from west of High Island to San Luis Pass. The storm which is affecting some cruise ships has according to the National Hurricane Canter maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is moving northwest at 10 miles per hour.

The warning is in effect from Cameron, Louisiana, to Intracoastal City.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Bret is moving along South America's northern coast.

Gulf Coast states are preparing for a powerful weather system of their own. Its maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with weakening expected to begin later in the day.
