Scalise Is Still In Critical Condition, But Doctors Are Optimistic

18 June, 2017, 02:11 | Author: Rickey Alvarado

"We are encouraged by improvement in his condition in the last 36 hours", Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center told reporters at a news conference. The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said. Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. He said doctors have turned down Mr Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members. Sava attributed Scalise's "major initial risk to life" to "the hemorrhage that results when that bullet travels through blood vessels". Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.

The man who opened fire on Republicans practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game Wednesday morning had a list of names on him at the time, a source confirmed to WTOP. The fact that his injuries brought him close to death was not widely known initially. The rifle blast left possibly hundreds of bullet fragments that the doctor said will not likely be removed.

"We fully expect him to be able to walk. hopefully, run". He ultimately was transferred to the intensive care unit, where doctors began to control his bleeding. "I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

Rep. Franks says, "I have been notified there is an investigation I might be involved in".

Witnesses said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if not for the Capitol Police officers on duty as part of Scalise's security detail and the gunfight that ensued as local law enforcement arrived.

House Speaker Paul Ryan paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday. Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican.

Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday. The 51-year-old remains in a critical condition.
