Former Penn State administrators sentenced to jail time in Sandusky case

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.

The former president of Penn State University and two other former administrators were sentenced to jail terms Friday for failing to report a 2001 allegation that assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was molesting young boys. Lawyers said he plans to appeal.

Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and ex-senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz were sentenced by a judge Friday in Harrisburg, Pa. Spanier was convicted in March on one count of child endangerment.

"These men are good people who made a awful mistake", judge Judge John Boccabella said.

The sentencing ends the last criminal case in the Sandusky scandal, which broke in 2011 and led to the firing of Paterno.

Boccabella noted that others who were aware of McQueary's report, including McQueary and Paterno, could have called police.

The trio of former admins will begin their respective sentences on July 15.

The only motive for the men's silence, he said, appeared to be to protect Penn State's reputation.

At the center was Spanier, who once ranked among the nation's most prominent and longest-serving university leaders.

Three ex-Penn State officials are getting jail time for failing to report now-convicted sexual predator Jerry Sandusky to authorities.

Sandusky was not indicted until 2011. Spanier, who maintained a steely composure, also apologized to the victims, his own family and the Penn State community.

"I deeply regret I didn't intervene more forcefully", Spanier told the court Friday.

"What was it about that conversation that made you change your mind?" The university has paid almost $250 million in settlements, legal bills, fines, public relations and other costs stemming from the scandal.

Reaction after the sentencing reflected the divisiveness of the case. But, Liddle said, "it is my hope that by spending some time behind bars, they not only will atone for their crimes, but will spend each day thinking about what they can do to make the world a safer place for children".

Pennsylvania's attorney general said the verdict "leaves no doubt that there are consequences for failing to protect children in Pennsylvania". He was convicted of child endangerment.

A graduate coaching assistant said that in 2001, he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in a football team shower. "And that is inexcusable".

The prosecution's key evidence included notes and email exchanges in which Curley, Schultz and Spanier debated what to do after McQueary's report.

They reserved their harshest words for Spanier.

All three men have denied they were told the encounter in the shower was sexual in nature. Spanier never met with McQueary, and heard about the incident through Curley and Schultz. Former athletic director Tim Curley will spend three months in jail. Former Penn State vice president Gary Schulz will also serve two months.

Speaking in court before they were sentenced, Curley and Schultz sobbed as they apologized to the victims, saying they should have done more. He will serve three months in jail followed by house arrest and pay a $5,000 fine.

In sentencing memos, prosecutors accused Curley in particular of "astonishing" and unbelievable memory lapses on the witness stand.

All three men apologized before Judge John Boccabella sentenced them. Curley has had lung cancer for more than six years. Schultz said: "It really sickens me to think I might have played a part in children being hurt".

He also criticized Paterno for not calling authorities, as well as McQueary and his father and a neighbor who counseled McQueary.
