  • LA-area father arrested on suspicion of killing missing son

Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department apprehended 35-year-old Aramazd Andressian Sr. on Friday afternoon, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The father of a 5-year-old California boy who has been missing for over two months was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder.

The father's attorney, Robert Nardoni, has previously said his client is innocent and that last week's arrest came as a surprise.

"I felt very sad", Levon Asatourian, Andressian Sr.'s uncle, told NBC4 Friday night.

Prosecutors last week filed one count of murder against Andressian, who is scheduled to be arraigned in Los Angeles later this week. Investigators believe Andressian killed his son a short time later and then drove about 145 miles (230 kilometers) later that morning to Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County.

Andressian, who detectives have said has given "inconsistent" and "misleading" statements, hired an attorney and refused to cooperate with investigators. His auto had been doused with gasoline and prescription drugs were found at the scene.

They have combed Arroyo Seco Park in South Pasadena where the father was found several times in the past few months, using dogs and drones to help in the search.

42 killed in multiple blasts and firing in 3 Pakistani cities
At least 10 people are feared dead and over 50 injured as two subsequent explosions hit in Parachinar in Kurram Agency. At least 13 people, including seven police officers, were killed and at least 19 were wounded, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide investigators coordinated the arrest with LA County Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau Fugitive Taskforce, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department CAPE (Major Violator/Narcotics Crimes Bureau), Homicide Section and the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Taskforce of the United States Marshals Service. Andressian claimed he had no memory of what had happened but said he suspected he had been attacked after he took his son to the park the day he vanished.

Andressian told investigators he had ingested a prescription medication that wasn't his own that morning, deputies said. The vehicle was doused in gasoline and there was a rag sticking out of the gas tank.

At Monday's news conference, sheriff's officials said they believed the father was trying to kill himself.

Andressian's son, Aramazd Andressian Jr., was reported missing April 22 after the boy's mother said her estranged husband did not return his son during a planned custody exchange. She said she will miss "Piqui" - her pet name for her son - "each and every second of every day for the rest of my life".

With tears streaming down her face, Estevez spoke directly to her child.

When he failed to meet with ex-wife Ana Estevez at their pre-arranged meeting place on April 22, the authorities were notified by the anxious mother. "I am counting the days until I see you honey, and I will never stop looking for you". Police have not disclosed what information led them to make the arrest or why Andressian was in Las Vegas.

The case remains under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by dialing 800-222-8477.
