Trump's hotel just got mercilessly trolled by a legendary artist

17 May, 2017, 02:06 | Author: Rickey Alvarado
  • One projection on the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. told guests to bring their bribes inside

One of his slides, which Bell said he finished on the drive to the hotel, explains the Constitution's Emoluments Clause that prohibits USA officials from accepting foreign gifts.

His latest action, however, began to go viral on social media nearly as it was happening.

"Bell, who gathered attention in 2015 for projecting "#JaredLies" in protest of Subway construction, also projected the Constitution's emoluments clause on Trump's hotel with "Emoluments Welcome" broadcasted alongside images of the Turkish, Chinese, Saudi Arabian and Russian flags. It all started at the end of November, when he and several other folks projected the message "Experts Agree: Trump is a Pig" on to the front of the building (a reference to the late 1980s campaign by the activist group Positive Force declaring the same of Reagan's attorney general, Edwin Meese).

And there isn't all that much the authorities can do about it.

The projections included "Pay Trump Bribes Here", "Emoluments Welcome", and the entire emoluments clause, which prohibits people who hold federal office from taking money from foreign governments.

Game 7 now heads back to Boston a chance to set a date with the well rested Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Point guard Isaiah Thomas took the pass and was left to chuck up a prayer after the clock, reading 1.7 seconds, was started.

Critics have argued that President Trump is in violation of this clause, and the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington even filed a lawsuit against Trump earlier this year, alleging he's violated this clause because his businesses accept payments from foreign governments. "But from the research we did, it was legal".

"That is one of the big things that I'm trying to do - using our artwork to explain these stories that are tricky" said Bell, an artist and filmmaker based in the District. "We can't create an impediment on the sidewalk".

"There will be a lot more projections to come", he said. "It's great that it's being talked about and that people are enjoying the moment, talking about these issues".

In each case, the projections don't last very long - last night's went on for 10 minutes - but they create conversation, both on the internet, where the images often go viral, and in person, as passersby react and respond. "So, part of the thing is making things that you can laugh at, that you can share, that aren't just reacting to them". Plus, this has only inspired Bell to develop new ideas for future protests. "We did it at the right time because everyone is just so utterly depressed and bummed out with what's going on".
