Tesla executives launch a mysterious startup for 'materials recycling'

  • Tesla linked to investment in a supply chain firm that focuses on recycling

The filing lists Tesla Chief Technology Officer J.B. Straubel and Tesla's head of Special Projects Andrew Stevenson as chief executive of the materials recycling company called Redwood Materials.

Whatever it is they're doing, the company now operates out of a regular office building in Redwood City, California, and the SEC filing shows it has $2 million in its pockets.

Tornadoes devastate east Texas
A severe thunderstorm located over Fort Benning in Georgia was at risk for developing into a twister, the weather service said. The National Weather Service says parts of the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, Georgia and MS could be affected.

We also uncovered a sparse website linked to the company, describing the initiative as targeting the the entire materials lifecycle, leveraging "advanced technology and process development for materials recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse". Building a team of battery experts to kick off a new startup would allow Tesla to explore the recycling potential of battery and other manufacturing byproducts to truly re-think the entire process, as it has done with almost every other piece of its business to date. A Tesla spokesperson did not respond to a request for clarification about the new venture. A phone number listed on the filing is directed to a the voicemail box of Stevenson, and the official website of the company reveals nothing more than a splash screen that reads, "Unlock the value of your materials".

We reached out to Tesla for comment and will update if we hear anything back. In a recent March 2017 keynote address, Stevenson mentioned "re-thinking the materials supply chain" as an area of innovation for the auto company. The SEC filing doesn't explicitly mention this but the company seems to have close ties with Tesla. CBInsights believe that materials efficiencies and innovation could be a focus area for the company, considering Tesla's plan to take its manufacturing for volume production. As noted by Electrek, Straubel has been known to invest in companies without any connection with Tesla, like his backing of new energy storage startup Axiom Exergy. Right now, it's only a small part of the business since most of Tesla's packs are less than 5 years old, but 10, 15, or 20 years from now, the company will likely have a constant supply of old battery packs with minerals potentially worth thousands of dollars and much more easily accessible.
