  • At event in Beijing Kushner family uses promises of a U.S visa to raise moneyMore

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that representatives from the Kushner family business gave a presentation to wealthy Chinese investors in Beijing, trying to woo them to invest in a major real estate project in New Jersey. As the Post noted, she encouraged investors to apply for United States residency through the EB-5 visa program-a controversial initiative that was renewed the day before in federal spending legislation signed into law by President Trump.

The pitch seeks to raise funds from Chinese investors through the USA government's EB-5 visa program, which allows permanent US residency for those who finance projects that create a certain amount of jobs. The company, which included mention of Mr. Kushner and a large photo of his father-in-law at the event, has apologized for any impression of influence trading that might have been created by its presentation. "That was not Ms Meyer's intention". Similar events will be held at the InterContinental in Shenzhen on May 13 and the Four Seasons in Guangzhou on May 14. This is not a government visa-selling program. In a funding measure Trump signed last week to keep the US government running through the end of September, there is money for additional border security, but not the wall. A Washington Post journalist says she was "threatened, harassed, and forced to delete recordings" of the pitch.

The tagline on a brochure for the event: "Invest $500,000 and immigrate to the United States".

Kushner's sister, Nicole Kushner Meyer, told dozens of potential investors in Beijing that they should invest in a skyscrapers now being built in New Jersey, the Guardian reported.

KEITH: The Kushner family's attention-grabbing pitch meeting came just a day after President Trump signed a government funding bill that again reauthorized the EB-5 program without addressing any of the senator's concerns.

The Chinese company's advertisements for the Journal Square development described the project as "Kushner 1", with punchy subtitles declaring that it has "government support" and is "founded by celebrity developers", without elaborating.

And Kushner's attorney said he has divested his interests in the project and will recuse himself from matters concerning EB-5.

Almost 90 percent of EB-5 visas were issued to Chinese nationals in 2014, when the programme reached its quota of 10,000 visas.

SINGH: And how big of an issue is this for critics of the Trump administration who've long protested conflicts of interest with the Trump White House? Organizers even tried to physically prevent attendees from speaking to the press, but one potential investor did tell WaPo, "Even though this is the project of the son-in-law's family, of course it is still affiliated [with Trump]". Kushner resigned as CEO from his family's real estate company in January, ahead of joining the White House staff.

A Kushner Companies spokeswoman declined to comment in a New York Times article about the Beijing event published on Saturday. Therefore the Kushner family urged the assembled millionaires to "invest early" while the favorable rules are still in place. "Furthermore, numerous wealthiest areas in America have been inaccurately designated as "high-unemployment" in order to allow investors to obtain a green card for the smaller US$500,000 investment".
