  • Hackers hold Disney for ransom over new Pirates of the Caribbean movie

The hackers are reportedly demanding an exorbitant amount of money via Bitcoin from Disney, which has so far refused to pay the ransom and is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to apprehend the culprits.

Iger reportedly said that the hackers are threatening to release the first five minutes of the film if their demands are not met, and then the rest in 20-minute segments until they are paid.

Deadline reports Disney CEO Bob Iger stated they will not be paying the BitCoin ransom to the hackers.

Iger had mentioned the hack during a town hall meeting in New York City earlier today with employees of ABC according to the Hollywood Reporter. The hackers want Disney to pay a "huge sum" of Bitcoin, or else they will release the film in parts.

Mr Iger said that the corporation will not pay the group, which is threatening to post it online in segments ahead of its worldwide release later in this month.

If it is the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean flick that hackers have, a leak could be a particularly big blow for Disney.

Disney is dealing with online pirates.

Netflix also recently fell victim to a hacking scheme with their series "Orange is the New Black". However, the fact the studios refuse to pay does mean that as a revenue gathering exercise it is not particularly successful and extremely risky.

Other Pirates favourites set to return include Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Keira Knightly as Elizabeth Swann and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa.

As the owners of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, Disney has access to the biggest movie franchises ever with the studio past year reaping in more than $4bn with the four highest-grossing films all coming under its umbrella.

Disney's next two movies released in New Zealand are Pirates on May 25, and Cars 3 on June 22.
