Britons Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates saw their hopes of Giro d'Italia victory disappear after a police motorbike caused them to crash on Sunday's ninth stage, which was won by Nairo Quintana.

With 15 kilometers to go - just before the climb - riders in the main pack made contact with a police motorcycle stopped alongside the road, prompting the crash that involved Thomas, Landa, Yates and about a dozen other riders.

The pair were left behind as the leaders began the final climb up the Blockhaus and Thomas, who needed a couple of minutes to get back on his bike, appeared to be suffering from a shoulder injury. "It's ridiculous. My shoulder popped out".

Quintana stamped his authority on the Giro when he claimed the overall lead by winning the first big mountain stage, while defending champion Vincenzo Nibali was dealt a big knock when he cracked on the climb.

The Movistar rider finished 24 seconds in front of FDJ's Thibaut Pinot and Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin to take top spot from Luxembourg's Bob Jungels.

Quintana was in better spirits and said: "I showed that I'm happy with my legs and the legs of my teammates".

Thomas added: "I had felt good and then I crashed and my race was over".

Brooks agreed, saying: "I thought we would come out better tonight". "I don't know that we contested any of them". The Celtics' guard finished with 18 points and nine assists but took just 13 shots. "He played through it.

Thomas was able to resume the race, but as Nairo Quintana stretched away atop Blockhaus, the Welshman could only come home five minutes down - all but ending his GC chances. "The whole team was strong and I was strong". "That's most important for now".

Overall, Quintana leads second-placed Pinot by 28 seconds and third-placed Dumoulin by 30 seconds.

Quintana dedicated his victory to 2011 Giro champion Michele Scarponi, who died after a collision with a van while training last month.

Nibali was fifth, 59 seconds behind Quintana.

Entering the stage, Thomas stood second overall and Yates was third.

Monday is a rest day and Tuesday's 10th stage is a 39.8-kilometre individual time trial that should see Dumoulin, a time-trial specialist, gain time on his rivals.
