He left the party in 2014 due to his election as president.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejoined the governing Justice and Development (AK) Party after signing his membership declaration during a special ceremony in the capital Ankara on Tuesday.

Baykal realizes that you can not run for the presidency, a position that will give executive powers, without the backing of a political party. He is expected to chair the ruling party as well.

Earlier, party's member Yasin Aktay said that the party's executive committee chose to hold an extraordinary congress on May 21.

Erdogan repeatedly blasted Europe during the campaign for the referendum on expanding his presidential powers, as some European countries prevented ministers from his party from holding rallies to get expatriate Turkish voters to vote for the changes.

Supporters of the changes say they will bring Turkey efficient governance but opponents fear they will set the country on the path to authoritarian rule.

"There is no option other than opening chapters that you have not opened until now", Erdogan said, referring to the individual policy areas that need to be concluded before Turkey joins the EU.

His comments on Tuesday came days after the European Union stated that Turkey must provide clearer signals on whether it intends to meet the entrance criteria in such areas as human rights and rule of law. "If you don't then goodbye!"

"We have to see what could be done in the future, to see if we can restart some kind of cooperation", Hahn said on Saturday, saying that he had not had meetings on the economy with NATO-member Turkey since January a year ago, normally a fixture of accession talks.

Sixteen chapters have been opened out of a total of 35 since accession talks began in October 2005, although Turkey's bid to be a part of the bloc dates back to the 1960s. "If not, we have nothing to discuss with you", he said.

Turkey's third President Celal Bayar was also a member of the Democrat Party.

The Turkish head of state has often railed against European leaders and threatened to hold a Brexit-like referendum on Turkey's membership talks.
