The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) blacklisted, the website of the most popular Chinese messenger.

Russian Federation has blocked China's most popular social messaging app WeChat, saying its internet service operator failed to register certain laws with the related government bodies in the country, according to information posted on the regulator's website on Friday.

Tencent told Reuters it was checking the status of its WeChat app in Russian Federation and was in talks with the relevant authorities.

Tencent says it's in contact with Russian authorities over its ban on the use of messaging apps connected to Wechat.

"We're experiencing a block and we're deeply sorry", a company official said on a Tencent microblog.

Chinese internet giant Tencent said Saturday its messaging app WeChat had been blocked in Russian Federation, adding it was in touch with authorities to resolve the issue.

WeChat, which had 889 million global users by the end of 2016, was not properly registered with Russian regulators, Tencent said.

The announcement, which was released May 5, cites article 15.4 of the law, which instructs sanctions for failing to release the responsibilities of coordinators of online information dissemination.
