  • Fischer spacesuit test May 11

An equipment water leak has stalled a spacewalk by two USA astronauts at the International Space Station on Friday.

Expedition 51 Flight Engineer Jack Fischer of NASA floats inside the International Space Station while wearing his spacesuit. Live coverage of the milestone event will begin in the stream above at around 6.30AM ET, with the spacewalk itself scheduled to start 8AM and continue for six-and-a-half hours.

"Outstanding, Peggy", came the voice from Houston's Mission Control.

During preparations earlier in the morning, a small amount of water leaked from the connection point between an umbilical hose and Fischer's suit.

Friday's mission was Whitson's ninth spacewalk.

The astronauts will exit the station's Quest airlock to replace an avionics box that routes command and data information to external science experiments.

Other jobs in Friday's spacewalk plan before the umbilical leak included the setup of a new high-definition video camera and a pair of wireless antennas outside the research complex, plus inspections and repairs of insulation on the station's Japanese robotic arm.

'It has been exhibiting some thermal issues of late, so it is being replaced, ' explained Navias.

This will be the ninth spacewalk for 57-year-old Whitson who is a record holder among United States astronauts for the longest period of stay in outer space while 43-year-old Fischer will venture his first spacewalk.

In light of that, it's pretty incredible that there haven't been any astronaut or cosmonaut deaths or serious injuries during spacewalks since they began at the station in 1998.

Fischer's enthusiasm for the beauty of the Earth beneath him was apparent throughout the spacewalk.

The first United States spacewalk started at 3:45 p.m. EDT on the third orbit when White opened the hatch and used the hand-held manuevering oxygen-jet gun to push himself out of the capsule.

NASA's bulky white spacesuits are aging, and the same models have been in use for four decades.

The 1 spacewalk in support of construction, maintenance or fix of the space station happened in 1998, when the NASA still used space shuttles and the space station itself was like a tiny, New York City apartment compared to the expansive space mansion that it is today.

The first spacewalk ever conducted at the station was on December 7 that year.
