  • Volkswagen Group firm Audi AG had bought the Italian sportsbike maker Ducati for $935 million in 2012

Audi AG is the owner of Ducati, and the same can be stated about the Lamborghini brand, but the Volkswagen Group controls the four-ringed company at the end of the day.

Ducati is still enjoying plenty of success as one source said the company makes about €100 ($109) million annually before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

The iconic marque was bought in 2012 by Audi, a VW subsidiary, but now Europe's largest vehicle maker is looking to streamline its operations following the "Dieselgate" crisis and is reigning in spending in all areas.

Volkswagen group has started to approach the potential buyers of the Ducati brand and Hero MotoCorp is one of them.

VW has apparently tasked investment banking boutique Evercore with evaluating options including a sale of the Ducati brand, which its Audi division acquired for about 860 million euros in 2012.

The motorbike maker may appeal to peers in China, India's Hero HROM.NS or investors such as the consortium that bought British sports auto maker Aston Martin in 2007, the sources said. Reuters was unable to get any comment on the matter from either Audi or Evercore.

It remained unclear whether large competitors such as Polaris PII.N , Harley Davidson, Suzuki 7269.T , Honda 7267.T or Kawasaki 3045.T might be interested, they added. While no official statement has been made, Reuters say no final decision has been made but Volkswagen is now contacting potential buyers. However, since then, Ducati has been profitable - posting sales of US$588 million for 2016. Reuters also says that another possible consideration is to offer Ducati on a public stock exchange, to raise funds. However, by March this year chief executive Matthias Mueller said there was still nothing to announce.
