Russian Federation vetoes United Nations resolution to condemn Syria chemical attack

  • Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov

The comments came after Mr Tillerson met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and later President Putin, reiterating the U.S. position that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must eventually relinquish power in Syria.

The chemical attack killed about 80 people and injured many more, yet Russian Federation does not seem to want to budge from its position of support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Russian Federation has claimed there is "growing evidence" that the gas attack which killed 87 Syrian civilians was staged.

He said the Russian hope was that Putin's message would be passed on to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump, meanwhile, told Fox Business News that the US had no plans to become more deeply involved in Syria and only did so because of last week's deadly chemical weapons attack that killed dozens.

The assault last Tuesday in Syria's Idlib Province led President Trump to authorize the US military two days later to fire 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian government airfield, from which the USA government believes the Assad regime launched the attack. "I would like to think that they didn't know, but certainly they could have".

The Putin-Tillerson meeting was believed to be the first between the Russian President and a top member of Mr Trump's administration since the U.S. businessman took office in January. "That could happen, and it may not happen, It may be just the opposite", Trump said. It was the first direct United States military action against Assad's forces since the start of Syria's civil war six years ago and led to a quick downward spiral in ties between Washington and Moscow.

"Our meeting today comes at an important moment in our relationship so that we can further clarify areas of common objectives, areas of common interest - even where our tactical approaches may be different - and further clarify areas of sharp difference so that we can better understand why these differences exist", he said.

Sergio Garcia was called the best golfer never to win a title, but that all changed Sunday in a dramatic finish at the Masters. I've been kind of accepting, too, that if it for whatever reason didn't happen, my life is still going to go on.

"The U.S. isn't serious in looking for any kind of a political solution", Assad said.

Still, Tillerson sought to stress the positives from his meetings.

Putin added that Syria had given up its chemical weapons stocks, Reuters reported.

"Frankly Putin is backing a person that is truly an evil person".

Later on Friday, Zarif is set to meet with his Russian and Syrian counterparts, Sergey Lavrov and Walid al-Muallem, with whom he will also hold bilateral meetings.

"We discussed our view that Russian Federation as their closest ally in the conflict perhaps has the best means of helping Assad recognize this reality", he said.

In Russia's view, the probe conducted by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should be widened to include experts from many nations, he said.
