Nintendo Switch Celebrates Second Biggest Platform Launch Since 1995

This is the first reporting period to include Sony's Horizon: Zero Dawn, which launched on February 28. Aside from Ghost Recon Wildlands taking a first place spot and Breath of the Wild in an easy second place finish, the top five consisted of games like Mass Effect: Andromeda, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Major League Baseball the Show 17. While we don't have the exact USA numbers, Sony reported that the outstanding Guerrilla Games title had sold more than 2.6 million units worldwide two weeks after launch, making it the best launch for Guerrilla in its history. All figures in this post do not cover the entire industry spend.

Speaking of the Switch, it managed to outsell both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in March, despite its limited availability. Total US hardware sales "almost doubled" Naji said, rising to $485 million.

Nintendo's "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" broke records for a new Nintendo game sold at the same time as a new Nintendo game machine, in this case the "Switch" video game machine.

And it seems the interest may indeed be mutual after the striker admitted he subscribes to both clubs' in-house TV channels. Having produced such impressive numbers while playing for a mid-table club, several top sides are now tailing him.

Switch sales topped Nintendo's "Game Boy Advanced" first-month sales back in 2001. "The two Nintendo Switch SKUs, the 32GB Gray Joy-Con, followed by the 32GB Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con, were the best-selling systems for the month". Additionally, the 900,000+ copies of Breath of the Wild that sold have added immensely to the already staggering numbers for the Zelda series, which has taken the top spot in the adventure genre since 1995. It's not the best start for a Tom Clancy game, however, as that distinction goes to The Division.

And with the full NPD results now available to the public, we can see firsthand just how successful the Switch launch was.

There's no information on exactly how well Horizon Zero Dawn did, other than it sold twice as much as Killzone 2 - which up till now has been developer Guerrilla Games' biggest debut.
