Google Implements New Features to Fight Fake News

  • Google is updating its search to demote fake news

With the tech giant still under a lot of pressure to do something about fake news and offensive content, Google is employing a new method to reduce the presence and visibility of either problem.

Google will depend on its users to help scrub its search results of fake news. By this menu users will be able to notify Google if they feel anything inappropriate in AutoComplete Search bar.

Google has also tweaked its search algorithms to ensure that "low-quality" content shows up lower in search results, which should minimize their reach.

The changes mean that people can report content they deem inappropriate that pops up within Google's autocomplete suggestion function, while also making changes to its algorithm to prevent the, sometimes wild, suggestions from popping up.

Ben Gomes, a vice-president of engineering at Google's search division, said it was making "structural" changes to tackle the new ways people had found to trick its algorithms. As such, Google promises it will get better at filtering out fake news in weeks and months to come. Just as editors at traditional media outlets have to curate content and separate fact from fiction, Google has to do the same on a massive scale for all the stuff published to the web. They also involve heavily biased contents that the search engine, Google, is trying hard to stop.

NY Times: Trump administration drops support for border tax
For decades, Republican lawmakers railed against saddling future generations with trillions in debt. Many economists are skeptical that growth could consistently eclipse 3 percent.

If too much misleading information appears in Google's search results, the damage could go beyond harm to its reputation for reliability. Google has already started using these guidelines in its algorithms in demoting such low-quality content and plans to incorporate measures that are more stringent, in future. Google has tweaked the search rankings, has improved the autocomplete feature, and has committed to being more transparent about Google products.

Google's human reviewers, equipped with the new guidelines, then rate the quality of results as it makes changes to its algorithm, which will help its algorithms further demote low-quality content.

Google has repeatedly downplayed the prevalence of fake-news. Facebook tried to solve the problem last fall by implementing a verification mechanisms to combat fake news, but it's not clear that it's working. Finally, Google is adding more information on the technology behind its Search features on its website. A similar feedback form is also available for any Featured Snippets, which appear at the top of some search results.

The existing feedback option for Featured Snippets has been updated to let users report examples of bogus, hateful, and vulgar information in the boxes. Google has now made a decision to bring you in the loop and offer feedback about the content being surfaced algorithmically on the website.
