Stephens, who executed Godwin in cold blood while broadcasting on Facebook Live, turned his weapon on himself Tuesday after a brief police pursuit in Pennsylvania.

Steve Stephens, who has been the center of a manhunt since Sunday, fatally shot himself in Erie, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police confirmed over Twitter. Stephens stopped and officers approached his vehicle, at which point Stephens shot himself.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said he wishes the situation didn't end this way because police still have a lot of questions. " ... We would like to have brought Stephens in peacefully and talked to him about why this happened".

The crime prompted a manhunt across the United States after the suspect shared another video on the social network, saying he would kill again. It was just the latest instance of crime footage being shared on social media.

Stephens also claims to have killed 13 others, but police say they have no evidence that he is a serial killer.

In the video Stephens posted on social media, he was heard saying: 'I snapped, I just snapped'. "One thing I do want to say, is that I forgive [Stephens]".

"I'm not happy he's dead at all, not at all".

Adam Reed told NBC News that a citizen tip placed Stephens' white Ford Fusion near the McDonald's early Tuesday. We'll keep you updated if more news should surface following Stephen's death.

When police arrived at the scene, Stephens fled and led police on an approximately two-mile chase.

While rumors had incorrectly placed Steve Stephens in Philadelphia on Monday, authorities caught up with the 37-year-old on Tuesday roughly 400 miles away in the northwest Pennsylvania county.

Facebook has come under fire with other instances of violence before: in March 2017, a 15-year-old girl was raped by multiple participants in Chicago, as the attack was streamed on Facebook Live.

Facebook has since announced it is launching a review for reporting harmful content. Williams said police were in the process of searching the area more thoroughly when Stephens was sighted.

"We have closure", Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said. Stephens had Godwin say the name of Stephens' estranged girlfriend before shooting him at point-blank range. Godwin did not seem to recognize the name.

Stephens' mother, Maggie Green, told CNN he was "mad with his girlfriend".

Detectives spoke with the suspect on Sunday by mobile phone and tried to persuade him to surrender, police said.

Within a day, authorities expanded the search nationwide and offered a 50,000 dollar (£39,000) reward for information leading to his capture.
