  • French historian Henry Rousso nearly deported from US

"I have been detained 10 hours at Houston International Airport about to be deported", Mr Rousso, 62, confirmed in a tweet on Saturday.

Golsan said he immediately called university officials, following which A&M President Michael K. Young to enlist the help of Texas A&M Law School professor and director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic Fatma Marouf. He was admitted into the United States early on Thursday. Rousso also has been a research associate and visiting professor at many U.S. institutions, including Harvard University, Dartmouth College and the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. He was subjected to a formal questioning which included his taking an oath and giving fingerprints as well as a standard body search to which he objected.

"This incident has caused me some discomfort, but I can not stop thinking of all those who suffer these humiliations and legal violence without the protections I was able to benefit from", he wrote.

Rousso says he was told he'd be flying back to Paris on the first available flight.

But Rousso, an Egyptian-born French citizen, was "mistakenly detained" by USA immigration authorities, according to Richard Golsan, director of the Glasscock Center for Humanities Research at Texas A&M.

"The officer who arrested me was 'inexperienced.'" Rousso was traveling to Texas A&M to participate in a symposium, featuring the chancellor of the Texas A&M system and others on a number of topics. No apology was forthcoming.

News of the incident comes just days after it emerged that Mem Fox, the Australian author of children's books including Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes and Possum Magic, said she might never return to the United States after she was detained and allegedly insulted by border control agents at Los Angeles airport.

Rousso released a public statement on twitter saying, "Thank you so much for your reactions..."

In late January President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing a 90-day entry ban for citizens of seven Muslim majority countries, though not including Egypt.

The ban was later halted by a USA federal court.
