2012 Volkswagen Beetle Unveiled

April 18, 2011 | Transportation

The new 2012 Beetle has been released for viewing by the public.  This years model was first made famous by Oprah Winfrey when she gave away 275 of them to her studio audience on her “favorite Things” show but was unable to show them what the car look liked.  The waiting is now over, in a simultaneous even taking place in both New York City and Shanghai the car is on display.

The car goes on sale this fall with a brand new look, a little longer, a little wider and a little less bubble-shaped.  This model is the first produced since 2010 and will be available in three different engine choices: a 2.5-liter five-cylinder gasoline engine, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or a 2.0-liter diesel engine.

Also available this year is a panoramic sunroof stretching from windshield to back window making almost a convertible out of the bug.  Other options include adhesive wraps to provide designs and multiple “looks” to the vehicle.

The Beetle was first introduced in 1938 and stopped production for many years until 1998 when it was re-released with a fresh look and air conditioning. Volkswagen has some very aggressive sales goals for the next 7 years and are hoping this new Beetle will lead the way.  It’s most recent release of the Jetta compact sedan has not reached the expectation of many auto critics, being ranked last in most categories by Consumer Reports magazine.
